FDA Renewal Requirements

Understanding the biennial renewal obligation under 21 CFR Part 1, Subpart H.

Renewal Window

All registered food facilities must renew their FDA registration during the October 1 – December 31 window of every even-numbered year (e.g., 2024, 2026, 2028). Renewals submitted outside this window are not accepted.

Who Must Renew

Any domestic or foreign facility that manufactures, processes, packs, or holds food for human or animal consumption in the United States and is currently registered with the FDA must complete biennial renewal.

Consequences of Missing the Deadline

Failure to renew during the required window results in automatic suspension of the facility's FDA registration. A suspended facility may not import or distribute food in the U.S. until the registration is reinstated.

Information Updates Required

During renewal, facilities must confirm or update all registration information, including facility name, address, contact details, food product categories, and U.S. Agent information (for foreign facilities).

Cancellation Option

Facilities that are no longer operating or no longer subject to FDA registration requirements may cancel their registration during the renewal window rather than renewing.
